Youth leads the climb to Mt. Agad-agad

With the effort of providing space for the youth to discuss and reflect on the current condition of the ecology and the crisis it is facing, on April 19 and 20, the Liga ng Makabagong Kabataan (LMK) organized a mountain climb in Mt. Agad-agad in Iligan City. The climb was called Panata sa Kalikasan 2014 and it was participated by 30 youth participants coming from LMK- MSU and Iligan Chapters, Lawig and Kilusang Kabataan (KK).

The Panata sa Kalikasan aimed to bring the youth closer to the nature thereby enhancing their appreciation of its importance to human life. The highlights of the climb were group discussion and team building activities such as games and music jam. The theme of which revolved around ecosystem.

During the reflection process, most of the participants have common observation on the current state of the ecology. Mostly observed that pollution is taking its toll; that natural calamities become frequent that bring unprecedented damages to life and property; that mining is the cause of forest and environmental denudation in many regions; that human insatiable greed for profit further the destruction of the last bastion of resources on earth; and that, privatization of common resources denies common people of livelihood and life.

As a new framework for economic and political discourse in managing resources and responding to the needs of human being without jeopardizing the ecology, eco-socialism was introduced. The framework puts emphasis on the reduction of carbon emission in the atmosphere, which is the main agent in global warming, through sustainable practices such as community-based management of resources and by dismantling corporate control over the natural resources.
