Help Tantaon IDPs!
An appeal to help internally displaced persons (IPDs)
and families in Brgy. Tantaon to regain their normal life
On
December 10, 2013, after some of the people were verbally threatened to be
evicted from the land where their houses are built, more than
80 fishefolk-families in Barangay Tantaon, Sultan Naga Dimaporo in Lanaodel
Norte evacuated their houses and transferred to the nearby island which they
now called Isla Noah or New Ozamis.
The
displacement of the families was caused by a political dispute between the two
siblings who vied for the barangay captain position during the 2013 local
election. After losing the electoral race, one of the siblings vowed to evict
the people, whom did not vote for him during the election, from his land.
It
has been more than four (4) months already since they transferred to Isla Noah,
the displaced families are still coping with their new situation, building new
houses, and recovering their lost opportunities due to the conflict. To fully
bring them back to their normal life, they need assistance from line
agencies, individuals, organizations and government officials to
assist them in their recovery stage. Their urgent needs include electric/power
supply, potable water, toilet materials, and school supplies for the elementary
students.
In
this connection, the LAWIG-an organization of student and
teachers in Mindanao State University, Marawi City- is appealing to all
concerned individuals, organizations, line agencies and government actors to act
on the situation of the internally displace families in Brgy. Tantaon.
The outside support in their predicament situation is crucial in speeding up
the recovery of the affected families from their dire condition.
Lawig
is organizing a project called “Project Tantaon”. The first wave of community
intervention will be this coming May 17, 2014. The project aims to raise
material and financial donations to support the following needs of the affected
families of fisherfolks:
1.)

papers, and toys);
